Invisalign®, giving parents something to smile about

Hey moms & dads! Focusing on your kids’ teeth and oral health so much that you’re neglecting your own? If you’ve been thinking about having your own set of perfectly-aligned teeth, Dr. David Skibell and our staff can help! We are specially trained to offer an adult-friendly option for straightening teeth called Invisalign.

This course of treatment consists of a set of clear aligners that are molded to fit your teeth using a proprietary technology. You wear them all day and night, except for meals, brushing, and flossing – when you can easily slip them out to make eating and cleaning a snap!

Because they’re clear, your teeth will be steadily straightening – and no one will know it but you! Please give us a call to set up consultation with Dr. Skibell, so we can discuss the specifics of your treatment. We also gladly provide Invisalign Teen for younger patients.

Have a great weekend!

Ask Dr. Skibell: What's the deal with retainers?

If you recently completed treatment at the office of Dr. Skibell, our entire staff would like to congratulate you, again! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Skibell will provide—or has provided you—with retainers.

After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Skibell is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for an entire lifetime.

To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment, please visit our website for instructions and read this helpful article about retainers. You may also give us a call or ask us on Facebook!

Ask Dr. Skibell: Can germs really live on my toothbrush?

Great question! Fall is upon us, and with it comes the dreaded cold and flu season. After recovering from your cold, Dr. David Skibell will tell you one of the most important steps you can take to avoid becoming reinfected is replacing your toothbrush!

Germs can linger on the bristles, and you risk prolonging your sickness by continuing to use the same toothbrush. Be smart - keep a spare, just in case! To protect your toothbrush from bacteria all year long, consider the following tips:

• Wash your hands before and after brushing

• Allow the brush to air dry after each use, harmful bacteria dies after being exposed to oxygen

• Store the toothbrush in an upright position to allow water to drain and dry faster

• Replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months. Worn bristles are less effective in properly cleaning your teeth, and can actually be damaging to teeth if used too long!

We hope these tips help! Feel free to call us if you have any questions or ask us on Facebook. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Dr. Skibell wants to know: what's on your fall reading list?

This week marks National Young Reader's Week, and during this time, it’s more important than ever to remind your child to read on a regular basis. After all, reading helps kids develop the mind, expands a child’s knowledge base, activates his or her flow of ideas and boosts their confidence. Plus, reading is fun!

Tell us: is your child reading a book this fall? If so, what's on his or hers reading list?

If you're out of ideas for great fall reads, we encourage you to ask Dr. David Skibell or our team for suggestions, and we would be happy to provide a few great titles. You may also ask a local librarian here in Houston for some suggestions or check out various fall books for kids and teens that we found today, thanks to Barnes & Noble.

Happy reading everybody!

Hey Dr. Skibell! What's Invisalign, and is it right for me? [Video]

We've blogged about Invisalign before, but today thought we'd share a helpful video for those who are intrigued by the idea of straightening their teeth without using traditional metal braces. The Invisalign system at the office of Dr. David Skibell is a state-of-the-art system of clear, removable aligners that we proudly offer to adults and teens at our convenient Houston office. We have plenty of resources on our website to check out about Invisalign, or give our office a call at (713) 782-4566 for a consultation to learn if this revolutionary new treatment option is right for you!

Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment. Plus, brushing and flossing are no problem. They are also comfortable, with no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in our office getting adjustments. Dr. Skibell is a Certified Invisalign® Provider in Houston.

Ask Dr. Skibell: Why are straight teeth so important?

Some people wonder why Dr. David Skibell and our team work tirelessly to give our patients straight teeth. Of course it’s nice to have a smile full of evenly-aligned teeth, but did you know that straightening your teeth at Dr. Skibell's office can keep them healthier? Straight teeth lead to better oral hygiene, increasing your chances of keeping your own natural teeth for a lifetime!

Straight teeth are less prone to decay, because they collect less plaque, the sticky colorless substance that forms on our teeth and leads to tooth decay; and, they are easier to keep clean!

If you’re wondering whether your teeth might cause problems because they are out of alignment, please give us a call to set up a consultation at our convenient office in Houston. Dr. Skibell can help you decide whether or not you will benefit from orthodontic treatment.

Dr. David Skibell and our team realize this is a great opportunity for us and to raise awareness about the importance of oral hygiene. National Orthodontic Health Month also aims to recognize the dedicated work of orthodontists like Dr. Skibell and other dental professional in Houston.

The AAO recommends patients avoid the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:

• Caramel

• Popcorn (including un-popped kernels)
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Licorice
• Bubblegum
• Taco chips
• Ice

Ask Dr. Skibell: Is Invisalign® really for everyone?

Yes, it is, and that’s part of what makes it work. A complimentary consultation with Dr. David Skibell can determine if Invisalign is right for you. Invisalign uses a series of invisible, removable and comfortable aligners that no one can tell you’re wearing. So, you can smile more during treatment as well as after. Invisalign is made with 3-D computer imaging technology and has been proven effective. Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment.

So, how does Invisalign work, you ask? You wear each set of aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move — little by little, week by week — until they have straightened to the final position Dr. Skibell has prescribed.

Dr. Skibell is a Certified Invisalign Provider in Houston. If you have questions about Invisalign, or would like to find out if you are a candidate for Invisalign treatment, please give us a call at (713) 782-4566. We hope you're having a wonderful weekend!

Fun fact Friday with Dr. David Skibell!

At the office of Dr. David Skibell, we know our patients love fun facts - LOVE THEM. The American Association of Orthodontists has come up with some fun facts about orthodontics that Dr. Skibell and our staff thought you would enjoy. Have a wonderful and relaxing weekend!

• There are nearly 4 million people in orthodontic treatment throughout the United States. Three out of four are younger than 18.

• The first mechanical treatment for correcting irregular teeth was suggested by Gaius Plinius Secundus (A.D 23-79).The American Association of Orthodontists is comprised of more than 12,000 members in the United States, Canada and abroad.

• The time required to complete orthodontic treatment ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

• Of the 160,000 dentists in the United States and Canada, 8,000 are practicing orthodontists.

• The cement that attaches the braces to the teeth is now made with a special fluoride-releasing substance.

• Wires activated by body heat used in today's braces originally were developed by NASA for use in the space program.

• In addition to alleviating or preventing physical health problems, orthodontics can boost self-esteem as treatment aligns teeth, jaws and lips.

• Famous orthodontic patients include: Dr. Joyce Brothers, Hale Irwin, Cher, Diana Ross, Phyllis Diller, Chelsea Clinton, Whoopi Goldberg, Daisy Fuentes and Brandi.

Ask Dr. Skibell: When should my child come in for a consultation?

Dr. David Skibell will tell you that braces were originally considered to be best appropriate for teens. But these days, kids as old as seven are beginning their orthodontic treatment. Because preadolescent kids are typically not self-conscious, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists suggest it could be a good idea to start early.

Experts, however, say it depends on the treatment required. Some children who get braces at an early age end up in a second phase of treatment, and end up having braces well into their teenage years despite starting young.

Most orthodontic treatment begins between ages nine and 14, and the folks at AAO estimate most orthodontic treatment lasts from one to three years, with two years being the average. It’s important, however, that children be screened no later than age seven for Dr. Skibell to assess what the best age for treatment is.

We hope this helps! Give us a call at (713) 782-4566 if you have any questions about your child’s treatment at our convenient Houston office! Have a great weekend!

Braces-friendly summer recipe!

Summer is still going strong here in Houston, and that means it’s time for some refreshing recipes! Our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists made an appetizing (and braces-friendly!) summer dish that is sure to delight. Remember, a healthy diet provides essential nutrients and helps you achieve the best possible result from your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Skibell.

Lime-Graham Cheesecake Nibbles

Ingredients:

Crust:
• 1½ cups graham-cracker crumbs (about 9 double-square crackers, crushed)
• 3 Tablespoons margarine, melted
• – or –
• 1½ cups gingersnap crumbs (about 24 to 30 gingersnap cookies, crushed)
• 3 Tablespoons margarine, melted

Filling:
• 2 eggs, separated
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 2 (8 oz.) packages cream cheese, softened
• ¾ cup sugar
• 3 drops green food coloring
• 2 Tablespoons lime juice
• 1 Tablespoon all-purpose flour

Directions

Preheat oven to 325°. Line two muffin tins with 24 cupcake papers. In a medium bowl, stir together the crumbs and margarine. Spoon 1 Tablespoon of the crumb mixture into each paper. Press down the mixture firmly with the bottom of a small juice glass. In a medium bowl, using an electric mixer, beat together egg whites and the salt until the mixture forms soft peaks. Set aside. In a large bowl, use the mixer to beat together the cream cheese, sugar, food coloring, lime juice and flour, until fluffy. Add the yolks until well mixed, then use a spoon to fold in the whites. Spoon a heaping tablespoon of the lime mixture into each paper. Bake at 325 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool on the counter for 20 minutes, then keep refrigerated. Makes two dozen.

Enjoy this great summer dish and have a great rest of the week!

Dr. Skibell and team, helping you save face this summer

Dr. David Skibell and our staff know sports-related injuries are common among children, let alone teens with braces. In a 2009 recent survey from the American Association of Orthodontists, it was discovered that 70 percent of parents said their biggest fear is that their child will get hurt while playing organized sports. That’s why our office is helping spread the word that many facial sports injuries can be prevented simply by reminding your kids to wear mouth guards.

In addition to mouth guards, the AAO has five quick tips for keeping kids safe during sport activities.

• Wear a helmet
• Stretch before and after a game or practice
• Wear protective eyewear
• Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
• Be observant even as a spectator

All of these can reduce injuries. Give us a call at (713) 782-4566 if you have any questions about mouth guards or your treatment with Dr. Skibell.

Dr. Skibell presents: Invisalign and your oral health

When considering options for their treatment, patients tend to ask Dr. David Skibell just how Invisalign treatment is so different than wearing traditional braces. Invisalign, a series of removable aligners that are nearly invisible, not only help straighten your teeth, but the treatment can improve your oral health. Here’s how:

Healthy gums: Straight teeth allow a close fit for gums. This lessens the gum stress that is caused by crowded or widely spaced teeth, thus also reducing red and swollen gums.

Easy cleaning: Invisalign is removable, therefore brushing and flossing is easier and you are able to maintain a healthy mouth. These habits are vital to avoiding tooth decay, plaque, and gum disease.

Improved speech and chewing: Properly-aligned teeth don’t have the discomfort or compound speech impediments that can be caused by crowded teeth or a deteriorating jawbone.

If you have any questions about Invisalign treatment at our convenient Houston office, we invite you to ask Dr. Skibell or our staff during your next visit. Or, you may post your question on our Facebook page!

We hope you enjoyed your weekend, and wish you a great upcoming week!

I love the fact that he talks to me when I am there, I have been to doctors that spend more time talking to their nurses about me than actually to me." ~ Amanda V.
